Objectively the BEST NON-SPECIALIZED screened high schools in New York City RANKED

Main Post:

Schools in 1-2 are just as good as each other, same with 3-9, and 10-16 are also basically the same. So the rankings could vary depending on preference and it’s a little bias

  1. Townsend Harris High School (Queens)
  2. Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Manhattan)
  3. New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math (NEST+m) (Manhattan)
  4. MANHATTAN/HUNTER SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL (Manhattan)
  5. Baruch College Campus High School (Manhattan)
  6. Millennium Brooklyn High School (Brooklyn)
  7. Columbia Secondary School (Manhattan)
  8. The Beacon School (Manhattan)
  9. Millennium High School (Manhattan)
  10. High School of Dual Language and Asian studies

11.N.Y.C lab school for collaborative studies (Manhattan)

12. Leon Goldstein High School (Brooklyn)

13. The Clinton School (Manhattan)

14. Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics (mcsm)(Manhattan)

15. Midwood High School (Brooklyn)

16. Manhattan Village Academy (Manhattan)

Top Comment: IMO, there is no "best" list. The best list is different for each person depending on what they're interested in and what they want to do.

Explain USA education system please

Main Post:

Can someone please explain the USA education system to me please. I’m from the UK and I never understand education posts from the US. In the UK we have primary school age 5-11 Secondary School age 11-16 college 16-18 ( all compulsory and no charge) then university 18-21 ish depending on course length which you have to pay for usually via student loan which is deductible once you earn over 27k at about 9% of your salary over 27k so if you earn 35k you pay 9% of 8k towards your student loan debt. The university fees are capped at £9,250 per year so if your course is a 5 year course the maximum you would come out with in fees are 5x£9250. Students can apply for additional grants to cover their student accommodation the amount they get would depend on their parent’s income.

Thanks in advance

Top Comment: Free, public education is K-12 in the US, from ages 5-18, typically. College/University/Trade School is after, but you're on your own there. There are grants/scholarships/loans, but they are piecemeal and different for many people depending on many factors.

which ‘top schools’ are actually WORTH it?

Main Post:

so i've decided im applying for cosmetology school, and i was really set on Paul Mitchell since a friend recommended it, but then i saw some stuff about it being a scam so im iffy. does anyone have pros n cons of the school they went to and can anyone give me a recommendation for a school location that helped with employment resources for after completing the program? My other choice is aveda but i rly want to know all the cons before going and also would love additional reccs. thank you! (edit: im most likely choosing aveda, but if anyone has info on the paul mitchell partner school in sf i would love to hear about your experience!)

Top Comment: Every school will have its pros and cons. Go with what is in your budget and feels right to you. At the end of the day, it’s just getting your hours to get your license. You truly learn once you are out of school and in the salon.

Why doesn't America's education system just teach them about the rest of the world?

Main Post:

I get not a lot of Americans are fortunate enough to travel but if they were taught in school the basics they wouldn't think America is the only country in the world and the world would be a lot less US defaultism lol why do they have to brainwash them from a young age to think America is the best and only country??

Top Comment: What I don't get is the complete lack of curiosity I've seen them display. The internet is such a huge resource, they could look up things in seconds and gather some knowledge, but they just don't. You don't need money, a college degree or to have travelled a lot to gain awareness about other countries and cultures but so many people don't bother whatsoever.

Why is the U.S education system so bad?

Main Post:

I live in Australia and am blessed with a for the most part competent education system that is managed well by our government, it has some minor pitfalls but overall its completely serviceable. A trend I have noticed online through exposure to American content is that in contrast to here in Australia, the U.S seems to have an extremely poor education system, spanning not just in their first years of education, where children walk around in their pajamas, but going all the way to the top, with universities seemingly just being one massive Gomorrah.

As a result most of the Americans I interact with online are pretty stupid, in some cases not even really comprehending the basics of conversation, being more set on fulfilling their ego with a "victory" in whatever discussion I am having with them. Maybe American culture contributes to this but I'm not sure.

It'd be interesting to hear anyone else perspective on this, am I just underestimating Americans? Have I only interacted with the bad crowd?

Top Comment: Confirmation bias. The ones who argue with you look stupid; the ones who don't argue aren't memorable. Our system has problems but we're still one of the best countries in the world for advanced degrees. Our public system isn't one unified system like in many other countries. Our department of education literally has no say on curriculum or materials, methodology, or hiring. Each school largely operates within its own district (surrounding few towns). Schools are funded mostly through property taxes and levies, so there is an incredible variation in funding and quality of school. Suburban areas with high value single family homes have a much larger tax base than urban/working class environments with multi unit housing. Teachers are also certified differently state by state so some states (Minnesota, Iowa, Massachusetts) have stringent requirements that would allow you to transfer anywhere, and other states (Texas, Tennessee, Arizona) will literally take anyone with a pulse, but their teachers will have to get recertified in states with higher requirements. Your experience in the American education system could be world class, or absolutely horrible. It depends on where you go.

Okay. Seriously what the fuck is going on with American Education?

Main Post:

I believe that we are all old enough to have this discussion as some of us are aspiring parents, or even parents ourselves since we are reaching our 30's. Right here is a valid post on the Gen Z sub showing a massive decline in education skills in 9th/10th grades post 2012 (and even worse 2015). I think it's relevant enough to post because all of us had basically graduated by the mid 2010's (and 2017 - I'm not forgetting 1999 Zillennials) but this is seriously a disturbing trend. I posted a comment that went got super upvoted saying "go look at r/Teachers" and it's true, I get that teachers DO go on that sub to complain but it was at one point people posting about one or two students who were troubled (archived go look). Now it's the entire damn class.

During school I remember that if you had your phone out it would be taken instantly and the teachers would confiscate it for the day. This is a notable shift because in 2013 smartphones became ubiquitous which lines up correlating to the drop.

I don't work in education but we have a few interns at my company that are in college, and holy shit, some of the work they do needs to be grammatically checked and rewritten by ChatGPT it's that bad.

Do any Zillennial teachers have an answer for this?

Top Comment: Hi, I’m a zillennial teacher. It depends on the school but where I taught most recently it was the lack of consequences and lack of caring. First, lack of consequences. These kids get passed no matter what they do. Student A failed my required class? Exempt his 3 lowest grades. Student B can’t pass because he didn’t do the assignment that the whole semester leads up to? Make it worth 15% instead of 30%. I tell my students they can’t graduate if they don’t pass my class and they say “yeah right, admin loves to say they have a 100% graduation rate.” Not my school, but there are schools where not turning an assignment earns a 50%!! For not doing it!! The school I worked at before the most recent one was worse. They used “restorative justice” but no they didn’t. If kids were in trouble they got sent to “culture.” Then the culture team would be like “omg you flipped a desk and cussed out your teacher? That’s so funny. Let’s play uno then I’ll give you takis and send you back to class.” A kid told me to kill myself and I couldn’t get him moved out of my small group class. Another kid pretended to shoot up my classroom and nothing. That same school asked teachers who we thought should be held back (from high school) but we weren’t allowed to recommend students with IEPs. So S can’t do double digit subtraction and is now in 10th grade and X didn’t do any work between 6th and 8th grade but still made it to 9th. Second, lack of caring. Kids don’t care. They do the bare minimum. A lot of parents don’t care or can’t devote time to helping their children with academics. And they don’t want to get help. We have study hall every day at the end of school (before the busses leave) but it’s like pulling teeth to get seniors (allowed to leave early if certain conditions are met) to show up. And it’s really really hard for me to care when they don’t. If I care, when only 7 out of 43 do an assignment I tried to make fun for them, it makes me upset and it sucks. If I don’t care and don’t try to make anything fun for them, then I get the same (pathetic) amount of effort in return, and don’t get upset.
